9 Things You Should Know About Music Streaming Algorithm

Just like social media, streaming platforms such as Spotify, Apple Music and others have their algorithm through which you may navigate them in favour of your music. Though we may not be able to tell or have access to these streaming algorithms, there are general factors that influence them such as:

Listening History:

The algorithm takes note of your listening history; the songs, artist and genre you play and how frequently.

User profile:

Your user profile is a make-up of your demographic information and user-generated playlist which influences recommendation. More often, we can tell the kind of music a person likes based on where they come from.

Song Metadata:

Metadata such as track title, artist, genre, and release date are used to categorize and recommend music. Accurate metadata helps the algorithm make more relevant recommendations.

User engagement:

The way you engage with music inclusive of likes, shares, playlist creation and inclusion, skip or repeat influences the algorithm which determines future recommendations.

Collaborative Filtering:

This compares your listening behaviour to that of users with similar tastes. Thus, the kind of songs that enjoy may be recommended to you.

Content-Based Filtering:

Music is content on streaming platforms and features such as BPS (Beat Per Second), tempo, genre, lyrical theme and key are the basis of alignment and recommendation owing to your listening history.

Playlist Curation:

Based on the playlist you create and/or listen to. It may recommend a playlist curated by others.

New/Latest Release:

New releases from artists you listen to often will likely come up to keep your music library updated.

Popular and Trending Music:

The algorithm is likely to push up trendy songs. This occurs especially if a user is attuned to explore current and mainstream hits.

It is important to note streaming platforms differ as to how the algorithm operates, highly depending on user preference and behaviour. Often, users are not given the scheme of how the algorithm works. However, you may get an insight by optimizing your experience and engaging actively on the platform to see what works and what might not. Music consumption can be engineered in a kind of way, strategically gearing our taste to familiar music styles and sounds. This is the possibility music streaming brings to the music industry, altering it somewhat completely.
